Stirling and Strathallan’s Future Backed by Record UK Investment

Yesterday, the Chancellor delivered the Spending Review to the House of Commons, outlining how the UK Government will allocate departmental budgets for the years ahead. The Spending Review sets out key priorities, including significant investment in research, energy security, and infrastructure, all aimed at driving economic growth across the country.

For Scotland, this Spending Review marks the beginning of a new era of growth. Billions of pounds have been committed to clean energy projects, including crucial development funding for the Acorn carbon capture project. This investment secures a pathway for the next generation of jobs in the North Sea energy sector, reinforcing Scotland’s role in the UK’s net-zero future.

A major highlight of the spending review is the announcement of a new national supercomputer to be built in Edinburgh, backed by £750 million from the UK Government. This world-class technological asset will not only support advanced research and innovation but will also generate high-skilled jobs in Scotland’s capital.

Scotland’s strategic importance in UK defence has also been reaffirmed. Through the ‘Clyde 2070’ programme, HM Naval Base Clyde will undergo a multi-decade, multi-billion-pound redevelopment. An initial investment of £250 million over the next three years has been announced, securing long-term jobs and reinforcing Scotland’s integral role in national security.

The UK Government has recommitted £452 million over four years to City and Growth Deals across Scotland. This includes support for the Stirling and Clackmannanshire City Region Deal, expected to boost regional development and generate thousands of jobs over its lifetime. Beyond individual programmes, the Scottish Government will receive £50.9 billion per year on average between 2026-27 and 2028-29. This represents the largest funding settlement in real terms since devolution in 1998. An additional £9.1 billion is also being provided for Scottish public services. Per capita, Scotland will continue to receive over 20% more than the equivalent UK Government spending in the rest of the country.

Chris commented: “This spending review brings further investment not only into long-term infrastructure, which will create jobs and economic stability for generations to come, but also historic investment to the devolved government.”

“The extra £9.1 billion for public services ends austerity in Scotland. However, with record funding, it is now up to the Scottish Government to ensure this investment is used effectively. One in six Scots remains on an NHS waiting list, and after 18 years of incompetence, many feel they have been let down. Scotland cannot afford another lost decade; it is time for a change of government in Holyrood and a new direction.”
