Chris Kane MP Urges Young People to Check for Unclaimed Child Trust Fund Savings

Chris Kane MP is encouraging young people across Stirling & Strathallan to check whether they have an unclaimed Child Trust Fund, after new figures from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) revealed that 758,000 matured accounts remain unclaimed across the UK, with an average value of £2,240.

Child Trust Funds were introduced by the UK Government in 2002 to give every child a long‑term savings account, supported by an initial government payment of at least £250. Although the scheme ended in 2011, millions of accounts remain active. These mature when the holder turns 18, meaning young people born between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011 may now be able to withdraw or reinvest their savings.

Chris said:

“I want every young person in Stirling & Strathallan to know they could have a savings pot waiting for them — money that belongs to them and could make a real difference at an important moment in their lives.

It takes only a few minutes to check, and it’s completely free. I strongly encourage anyone aged 18 to 23, as well as parents and guardians, to use the GOV.UK tool and make sure no one misses out.”

HMRC is urging young people to locate their accounts using the free online tool on GOV.UK. More than 563,000 people used the service in the year to August 2025, with September 2024 being the busiest month for searches.

To find an account, young people will need their National Insurance number and date of birth. Those who do not have their National Insurance number to hand can download it quickly via the HMRC app.

Accounts are held by banks, building societies or other savings providers. If a parent or guardian did not open an account, the government opened one automatically on the child’s behalf.
