Chris Demands Immediate Action on Alleged Online Handgun Ads
Share on Social Media
Chris has called for urgent action following reports of advertisements for handguns appearing on online platforms Google and YouTube.
The issue was first brought to his attention by concerned constituents who confirmed seeing ads promoting firearms for sale online – one of whom was confronted by an advert for a “Glock 19” while shopping for air filters.
Another, saw the ad before a video on a video streaming site, calling it “horrifying” and commenting that it claimed to be an advertisement for a handgun. They went on to say “Hopefully it is a scam, but I wondered who I ought to report it to, and if it is genuinely legal what can be done to end this state of affairs.”
In response, Mr Kane has escalated the matter by writing to the UK Minister for Policing, Fire and Crime Prevention, urging an investigation into this matter. He has also written to Google to demand that these advertisements be removed and that an investigation should be lodged.
Whilst he is still waiting on a reply from the Minister, Google has since responded confirming the “ad will be reviewed and acted on if appropriate.” Chris will continue to chase this review and ensure action is taken on this issue. Google has confirmed users can report ads to be reviewed using this link.
Chris commented: “This kind of advertising is both appalling, dangerous and deeply upsetting. Immediate action must be taken to remove these ads from online platforms, and a full investigation should determine how they were allowed to appear in the first place.
“I find these ads completely unacceptable. The issue needs immediate action by the technology companies, and I have written to Google and the Home Office to highlight the deep concern held by my constituents and I.”
If you come across an ad that you find unacceptable, please report it to Google or the relevant platform first. If that does not resolve the matter, you can flag it directly to Chris by emailing [email protected]
