Chris Kane Celebrates World Book Day

Today, Thursday, 6th March, marks World Book Day, an annual event dedicated to promoting reading for pleasure and ensuring every child and young person has access to a book. As part of the celebration, schools across the country distribute £1 tokens, which children can use to purchase a book for free.
Research shows that reading for fun is the strongest predictor of a child’s future happiness and success—more than their family circumstances, parental education, or household income. However, only one in three children say they enjoy reading, highlighting the importance of initiatives like World Book Day in making books more accessible and exciting.
World Book Day transforms reading into an engaging, enjoyable activity. Giving children the freedom to choose their own books fosters a sense of empowerment and enthusiasm. This fun approach has a real impact—one in four pupils say World Book Day encourages them to read more, find reading more enjoyable, and discover new books. Additionally, one in five children say the £1 book they receive is their first-ever book, demonstrating the significance of the initiative in expanding access to literature.
Last week, Chris visited Auchterarder Library to celebrate World Book Day. The library was recently saved from closure, thanks to a passionate local campaign. Speaking on the visit, Chris said:
“Libraries are essential in providing children and young people with access to books and fostering a love for reading. It’s fantastic to see so many libraries in Stirling and Strathallan with a bright future ahead.”

This week, Chris also attended a parliamentary event to celebrate World Book Day, where he engaged with organisers to discuss children’s literacy. He emphasized the crucial role of World Book Day in introducing children to the joys of reading:
“Not enough children and young people read for fun. World Book Day does an incredible job of making reading enjoyable and helping children own a book of their own.”
