Chris Urges Ed Miliband to Explore Radical Overhaul of Energy Bills

Today, Chris has joined over 100 Labour MPs in calling on Energy Secretary Ed Miliband to take bold action to ease the burden of energy costs on households across the UK.
In a letter coordinated by the newly formed Living Standards Coalition—a group of backbench Labour MPs focused on tackling the cost of living crisis—Chris and colleagues urged the Secretary of State to reform how energy bills are structured. Among the proposals are changes to the standing charge and a shift to Social Tariffs or Rising Block Tariffs, aimed at introducing a more progressive pricing system.
The MPs argue that such reforms would allow families to “spend more in their local shops and less on natural gas produced abroad,” helping stimulate local economies while supporting household budgets.
This intervention marks the first in a series of policy proposals from the new caucus, which is pushing for a stronger focus on living standards by the government.
Commenting on the proposals, Chris said:
“Many people contact me to tell me that lower energy bills would make the biggest difference to their cost of living. The UK Government is already making significant progress, expanding the Warm Homes Discount to support 6 million low-income households, establishing Great British Energy, and launching the Warm Homes Plan to upgrade 5 million homes.”
“But these proposed reforms would go even further. They would cut bills immediately, put more money in people’s pockets, and ensure households feel better off, exactly the kind of progressive change we need.”
