The End of the Radio Teleswitch Service – What Constituents Need to Know

Chris is urging constituents who may still have a Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) meter to contact their energy supplier, following the full shutdown of the service on 30 June 2026.
RTS was introduced in the 1980s to allow certain electricity meters, and in some cases heating and hot water systems, to switch automatically between peak and off‑peak rates using a longwave radio signal. This signal has now been permanently switched off as the supporting infrastructure has reached the end of its operational life and modern alternatives, such as smart meters, are widely available.
The shutdown followed a year‑long phase‑out led by Ofgem and industry, during which all recorded RTS meters were switched off area by area. Consumers identified as having RTS meters were contacted multiple times and offered replacements. Industry records suggest around 120,000 RTS meters remain on record, though suppliers believe most households are no longer reliant on RTS.
Chris said:
“RTS has now ended, and while many households will not notice any change, some could still experience disruption to heating or hot water if they have not yet replaced their meter. I would encourage any constituent who thinks they may have an RTS meter to contact their supplier as soon as possible.”
He added:
“Where issues have arisen, suppliers have acted quickly to replace meters and restore services. Government expects suppliers to continue responding rapidly, and I will keep supporting constituents who encounter problems.”
RTS meters typically control heating and hot water on a separate circuit from a property’s main electricity supply, meaning plug sockets and lighting are highly unlikely to be affected.
